- You have to not just do what you do, you have to solve problems and you have to solve problems efficiently and effectively and be able to communicate that solution to the person that you’re solving the problem for.
- My clients come to me because they have started an online business, an e-commerce store let's say, and they start to understand ‘OK well now I got to worry about shipping and e-mail marketing and taxes and all of these other things that they didn't realize’.
- So, they come to me specifically for helping them with their e-mail automation adding that final 20 percent of the business into the e-commerce site so that they can increase their sales. Increasing revenue, creating raving fans of their brand and creating more buyers. Repeat buyers.
- I'm helping them solve a problem.
- I ultimately figuring out that I enjoyed working with the types of clients I enjoy working with and then really understanding who they are as people and business owners.
- Once you have conversations with those kinds of people then you understand what their problems are.
- Early on I had quarterly calls with my clients where it was just a 10 or 15-minute call outside of any projects that I was working on anything like that. And it was just me going to them asking three questions.
1. How business was because every business owner loves to talk about their business.
2. What is it that you like about working with me.
3. How can I be more awesome. Which is basically just my phrasing of what do I suck at.
- Those three questions allowed me to hear my client’s language and what their problems were. So, it was really a 15-minute call to get my marketing material.
- When I started having those phone calls people were saying they liked working with me because I didn't talk geek speak, I was straight up. And because of this people wanted more regular calls, so great if you want more calls then I can charge for that.
- So, I worked that into my services and every week I have calls with clients.
- Freelancers should go where their customers are, not where other freelancers are. So, sites set up for freelancers to have a profile aren’t great because now you’re competing.
- Instead, it’s better to be in some sort of forum where your customers are, and you can solve problems for them.
- Go to Facebook groups and talk about the thing that you do online. I mean people on social media love to complain. Your customers are complaining. Find out what they complain about and solve that problem.
- Another way to find clients is to search online, ask questions of the problem that you solve and see what comes up.
- Put words like consultant or freelancer or services attached to your question to see what comes up and find the people that are writing blog posts about your problem.
- If you're a freelancer, you really have to look in on yourself and figure out what you want to do.
- I want to be by myself. I enjoy working with a handful of clients. I have clients I know that I could serve very well and know their business very well and know them personally very well.
- I know that I can serve them and help them and improve their business. I don't necessarily want to grow, but I can scale.
- I could scale my services and augment my existing services in other ways to better them their business.
- You could find people to partner with, somebody that could complement your own services and kind of role into like a virtual agency.
- Start with figuring out one problem you're solving and what are those other services that you can add in and then seek out those people that are experts in those other services.
