WHERE-DOES-BLOGGING-FIT-INTO-BUSINESS-STRATEGY
  • I firmly believe that we have not missed the boat with blogging.
  • I think that blogging is never really going to go anywhere, as long as people want to read content, blogging is here to stay.
  • I think it’s really, really important for businesses because it’s one of the best ways you can communicate with potential customers on your website.
  • That’s why I write a lot of business blogs for different companies, because they might not have the time to do it themselves but the see the value in it.
WHAT-IS-THE-VALUE-OF-BLOGGING-FOR-BUSINESS
  • I think the value of it really depends what kind of business you are. It’s not going to work for every business, just like having a Twitter account might not work for every business.
  • If you have an amazing blog but maybe your market is super crowded with blogs, then there is always another way to approach it.
  • The best way to create content that is new and exciting is to go on the internet and do a Google search of the question that you’re asking.
  • When you do that, you’ll probably find a load of boring articles and answers, so you really want to write something that’s new and different.
  • If you write a blog on ways not to do something rather than ways to do something, then that will appeal to a whole different audience of people. (Mic drop moment!)
WHAT-BLOGGING-KPIS-SHOULD-YOU-MEASURE
  • I’ve worked in a number of different marketing and PR roles so far in my career and it’s interesting because I’ve gone from blogs without much commercial focus to blogging with a goal of capturing data.
  • So, you’ve got to always think about what you want to achieve with your writing and set your KPI’s based on that.
  • The ultimate KPI to measure is unique visitors, you really want your unique website visitors to go up and that’s how you know that you’re creating good content that people are finding.
  • You also need to have a very specific call to action in every post. So, say you have a free course or opt-in available then you need to point people in that direction so that you know when you get an influx of traffic to that thing, it’s most likely come from that blog post.
HOW-TO-PROMOTE-YOUR-BLOG-POSTS
  • One way that I get more readership on my blog is through promoting it on social media in a fun and engaging way, so it’s about knowing which platform your audience is using is promoting it there.
  • So, I promote my blog primarily through Twitter and Instagram, I don’t really have a Facebook presence because it’s just not where my audience are.
  • The other way is to make sure you find a good keyword for your blog. Do your research around SEO so that you can make sure you rank for the topics you’re writing about.
  • Re-purposing content is also such an amazing way to make the most out of each piece of content you have. If you’re going to spend time writing something amazing, it only makes sense to make the most of that to reach more of an audience.
HOW-TO-CHOOSE-YOUR-BLOG-POST-TOPIC

The best piece of advice I can give to anyone who’s thinking about starting a blog or getting back into blogging is this:

  • Picture the situation – You’ve just done a full day at work, it’s been super stressful, you’re really tired, you come home and sit down on the sofa.
  • Now you need to write your blog article.
  • Now, whatever it is that you think you can come in after a long hard day and still write about this topic in a passionate and enthusiastic way…that’s what you should write about.
  • If you’re trying to write about something that you’re not that engaged with then it’ll come across in your writing. It’ll be boring and bland and people reading it will know that you don’t really care about the topic.
WHAT-DOES-YOUR-BLOG-STRUCTURE-LOOK-LIKE
  • I think you need to go with what is convenient for you and what will fit into your schedule, without being lazy with it.
  • Everyone can say that they’re too busy to write 1 blog post per week, but really if you spent less time scrolling through Instagram or watching TV you could easily do that. It just depends where your priorities are.
  • In terms of length, you shouldn’t really ever write a blog post less than 500 words because Google will think it’s just spam.
  • If you’re writing cornerstone content, then it needs to be really long-form and you need to link to that piece of content from all your other pieces of content.
